Your learning style is the way you learn most effectively. By identifying your learning style, you can maximise your language learning. Follow the tips below, learn how to learn best.

VISUAL STYLE LEARNING BY SEEING

AUDITORY STYLE

(learning by listening)

  • listen carefully to the teacher, classroom conversations, audio materials
  • take advantage of audiobooks and podcasts available online; pause frequently to repeat what you hear
  • listen to the songs in the language you are working on, and sing the lyrics out loud
  • ask questions in the foreign language, and listen carefully to the answers
  • read texts and directions out loud
  • have test questions read to you out loud
  • record yourself spelling words or reading texts, and listen to the recording
  • close your eyes to avoid being distracted by visual information or social interaction

KINESTHETIC STYLE

(learning by moving and doing)

  • take frequent, but not long breaks when reading or studying
  • take part in activities that involve moving, drawing, role-playing
  • act out the stories and texts you read
  • walk around, chew a gum, rock in a chair while reading or studying
  • tap a pencil, shake your foot while reading
  • trace words with your finger to learn spelling and keep your pace
  • use a computer to reinforce learning

VERBAL STYLE

If you can easily retain the information you have read, written, heard or said, then the verbal style is yours. Read articles, books, manuals. Use dictionaries. Take notes. Rewrite, paraphrase, and summarise in your own words. Volunteer to make presentations. Initiate discussions.
